Toxic Tap Water Makes Headlines.
Intro
Last week headliners were circulating across Australia with the words,
Chemicals Declared Carcinogenic Found In Tap Water
Confirmed for every state across Australia with hotspots found in the heavily populated areas of New South Wales and Queensland, these ‘PFAS’ which are classified as human-made chemical compounds, are currently impacting approximately 1.8 million Australians.
Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, these chemicals did not end up in tap water ‘by accident’. These chemicals ended up in tap water as a result of state and territory government APPROVAL. The same approval which has also been granted within the USA, although at lower permissable levels.
And so the obvious question is immediately raised:
How could ANYTHING that is proven to be carcinogenic be approved at ANY LEVEL in drinking water?
Dr Mariann Lloyd-Smith, Senior Advisor to the National Toxins Network, stated in an interview that PFAS are a ‘very nasty group of chemicals’ which have been found to be both ‘dangerous’ and ‘cancer causing’.
She further stated that these chemicals are linked to, ‘kidney and liver disease, dysregulation of the thyroid and insulin, reproductive problems, developmental problems in children, and of course, cancer’.
As a result of being ‘bioaccumulative’, PFAS build up in the cells and organs of the body a little at a time with ‘every exposure’, such as through drinking a glass of water.
Additional Everyday Households Which May Contain PFAS
Through our research we have discovered that in addition to tap water, these highly toxic chemicals are also found in non-stick frying pans, grease-repellant food packaging (i.e. paper and cardboard used for fast food and bakery goods, including pizza boxes and popcorn bags), stain and water-resistant treatments (i.e. for carpet, upholstery and clothing), personal care products containing the words ‘fluoro’ or ‘perfluoro’, fire retardant products (i.e. for fire proofing and fire extinguishing), and the majority of water bottles sold in grocery stores.

In addition, a past study was conducted in the USA in which various forms of food packaging were tested and sampled, including sandwich and pastry wrappers, French fry bags, pizza boxes and other paper packaging. These were taken from a total of 27 fast food chains and restaurants, with a total of 327 samples tested. Of these samples taken, a reported 46% of the paper packaging and 20% of the cardboard packaging, tested positive for PFAS.
Given the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had noted plans to start phasing out PFAS as of 2020, this came as a surprise that not all PFAS had been banned from food packaging by major manufacturers.
Health Conditions Which May Be Associated With PFAS Exposure
According to research published by the National Institute of Health, there is extensive health implications regarding PFAS exposure which impacts unborn children, infants, children and adults of all ages.
These include,
-throat infections
-lower respiratory tract infections
-atopic dermatitis
-allergies
-asthma
-thyroid disease
-inflammatory bowel disease
-liver disease
-cancer
-lipid and insulin dysregulation
-increased cholesterol levels
-reproductive impairments
-altered endometrial regulation
-low sperm count
-increased miscarriage risk
-adverse effects on breast milk
-adverse effects on infant and child development
-lowered birth weight

How To Limit Exposure to PFAS
Given these chemicals slowly build up in the body over time, the best means to limit further exposure is to avoid all products which are at high risk of containing PFAS (refer to the above) unless they specifically state ‘PFAS Free’. When it comes to tap water, unless on independently managed well water, it is important to find an additional means to filter household tap water, such as through a whole-home filtration system, an under-the-counter faucet filtration system, or at minimum, a wilderness water filtration bottle.
Privately owned water managed companies are an excellent source for information, referrals, services and products.
Supporting The Body In Detoxing from PFAS
Equally important is supporting the body in the removal of toxic build up that has already accumulated in the system by supporting the body’s organs of filtration and elimination through the following:
-A healthy diet containing a large majority of fruits, vegetables, nuts and sees
-Regular exercise such as low inpact aerobics or brisk walking
-Short term detox protocols such as juicing and colonics
-Infrared saunas or hot-cold showers to increase circulation -Herbs such as cayenne pepper and ginger to increase circulation and help cleanse the blood
-High-quality and all-natural all-in-one supplements to help rid the body of toxic buildup
